It Was for organ is inspired by Bach’s Cantata No. 4, «Christ lag in Todesbanden.»   There are two important quotes embedded in the work.  The first comes from verse four and includes the text, «Es war ein wunderlicher Krieg.»  The pitches, contour and poetry of this line continue to play an important role throughout the work.  The second quote comes from the continuo line that begins versus five and sets up the text, «Hier ist das rechte Osterlamm.»  I am attracted to these moments in the cantata both for their pitch content (they are rather chromatic) and imagery.
